7 Ways to Celebrate Earth Day

earth day

Earth Day is here once again and we should all take a moment to celebrate the beauty of our planet. In the post below you’ll find 7 simple ways to honor this day. But don’t stop there…by making just a few simple changes to our lifestyles, we can make every day Earth day!

7 Ways You Can Celebrate Earth Day, Today and Every Day!

  1. Reduce, Reuse, Recycle

In episode 351 of The Vegetarian Zen podcast, we explained the benefits of the 3 Rs: Reduce, Reuse, and Recycle.

You can visit the post for a more in-depth explanation of these three concepts, but here are a few small changes that can make a BIG difference!

    • Repairing vs. discarding
    • Canceling unnecessary mail
    • Not using disposable plates or utensils at home
    • Avoiding buying plastic water bottles
    • Not overbuying perishables at the grocery store (meal planning can help reduce food waste)
    • Buy in bulk when possible (less packaging). Reward companies that use less packaging in their products.
    • Plan your meals. Whether you’re planning on a sheet of paper or using an application like Plan To Eat, meal planning can help you reduce the amount of food you throw away.

  1. Make A Wonderful Meal Sourced From Local Farmers

In episode 97 of our podcast, we shared some tips to help save you time and money at your local farmers’ market. Many of these markets are outdoors, making them safer to visit in the age of COVID.

Not only is buying local is great for the planet, it’s also a great way to support small businesses in your community.

  1. Watch a Documentary About The Environment

This may seem like a simple one, but we believe that knowledge is POWER; this is a big reason we started our podcast in 2013.

Educating yourself about the state of the environment and the changes we can make to help it will, in turn, influence your behaviors and buying habits.

So pop up the popcorn and let’s watch a movie!

  1. Support Companies Who Support The Planet

One thing we emphasize often on the show is that we vote with our dollars. This is proven by the fact that so many companies are listening to our collective voices and finding ways to make their products more sustainable.

The best way we can show these companies we approve of their positive changes is to buy from them.

Even asking some of your favorite companies about their eco-friendly practices will increase their awareness of issues their customers care about.

  1. Spend Some Time In Nature

Almost every day Larissa and I take our dogs, Cosmo and Ruthie, to a neighborhood duck pond for some sun and exercise.

No matter what kind of day I’m having, the peacefulness of the pond and the various animals that live there always help me feel a deep connection with nature.

Taking some time to explore and appreciate nature is a wonderful way to honor Earth Day.

  1. Plant Something

I love having beautiful houseplants and outdoor vegetation around my house. Not only are plants great for the planet but they also help clean the air while making your home more beautiful.

So try surrounding yourself with some green, whether you plant a tree in your backyard or just add a few houseplants.

  1. Donate to A Non-Profit Organization or Do Some Volunteering

Volunteering with or sending a donation to an environmental non-profit organization is a great way to show gratitude to our planet and to our animal friends.

Check out this guide to environmental non-profits from Mother Jones to get some ideas, or consider sending a donation to your local wildlife rescue or animal sanctuary.

We hope this has inspired you to celebrate Mother Earth not only for today but every day!
