BBQ Jackfruit Sliders – Smoky, Saucy, and Easy To Make

I first tried BBQ jackfruit at a food truck festival in downtown San Antonio. Texans do not mess around when it comes to barbecue, so I wasn’t expecting much from a fruit trying to play in brisket territory. But boy, was I wrong! One bite and I was completely sold.

These BBQ jackfruit sliders bring big flavor with very little fuss. Tender shreds of young jackfruit soak up a smoky sauce that tastes like it’s been slow-cooked all day, without the actual waiting. Pile it onto soft slider buns, top with a crunchy slaw, and you’ve got a crowd-pleaser for game day, weeknights, or meal prep.

Even meat lovers tend to go back for seconds. The texture is hearty, the sauce is bold, and the whole thing is incredibly satisfying.

Why This Dish Works

Jackfruit is the secret weapon here. When you simmer and roast it, it takes on a texture that’s surprisingly close to pulled pork or chicken. The sauce is smoky, tangy, and just sweet enough—everything you’d want from a classic BBQ sandwich. Plus, since you’re not slow-cooking for hours, it’s a fraction of the time and effort.

This vegan recipes works across the board—for meat-eaters, vegans, flexitarians, and everyone in between.

Variations to Try

  • swap BBQ sauce for chipotles in adobo for a spicier version
  • add a drizzle of maple syrup for a sweet heat twist
  • use gluten-free buns or lettuce wraps to make it allergy-friendly
  • toss in some roasted salted cashews for extra crunch
  • try this as a filling for tacos or baked sweet potatoes

  • freeze cooled BBQ jackfruit in a container for up to 2 months
  • add fresh lime juice before serving to brighten the flavor

FAQ

What is jackfruit and where can I find it?

Jackfruit is a tropical fruit native to Southeast Asia, often used in meatless recipes for its pulled, meaty texture when young and green. You can find canned jackfruit in water or brine at Trader Joe’s, Asian stores, natural food markets, and many larger grocery chains.

Can I make BBQ jackfruit without an oven?

Yes! After simmering the jackfruit in the skillet, you can let it cook a bit longer to reduce the liquid. It won’t get the same crispy edges but will still taste great.

Is BBQ jackfruit healthy?

Jackfruit is low in fat and calories, and a good source of fiber. The healthiness depends on your barbecue sauce—look for ones with less added sugar or make your own.

What’s the best way to shred jackfruit?

After rinsing and cutting off the tough parts, use your hands, two forks, or a potato masher to pull the jackfruit apart. It naturally shreds easily once cooked.

Can I make this in advance?

Absolutely. This is one of our favorite vegan meal prep recipes. Make a batch, store it in the fridge, and reheat when you’re ready to serve. It actually gets more flavorful as it sits!
