Accidentally Vegan Foods

January 10, 2015

Being vegan in a carnivore’s world can be challenging.  However, there are some food products out there that are vegan without meaning to be.  PETA maintains a list of these accidentally vegan foods.

PLEASE NOTE: We are linking to this list because it may be helpful to some.  We don’t use most of these products ourselves for several reasons.  Many of the products on the list are manufactured by companies that oppose GMO labeling.  Many of the products are highly processed and contain ingredients we choose not to eat.

(You may also want to check out Episode 048 of the Vegetarian Zen podcast, in which we discuss foods that seem vegetarian but aren’t).

Main Street Vegan

Main Street Vegan: Everything You Need to Know to Eat Healthfully and Live Compassionately in the Real World (Penguin, 2012)

Main Street Vegan is right in line with the way we think here at Vegetarian Zen.  While we are not full-time vegans and we may never be, we can easily identify with Ms. Moran’s concept of normal, everyday people being vegans in the real world.

I love that there is a recipe at the end of each chapter, related to the chapter’s contents.  I also love that the chapters are short and engaging, and that Ms. Moran starts the reader off at the beginning of the vegan’s journey.  The first two chapters are titled “Decide That You Can Do This” and “Start Where You Are”.

While some chapters, like “Know the Beings Behind Bacon and Burgers” do contain some graphic information about the way animals are treated in factory farms, it is presented in a non-confrontational manner.  You can easily choose to read or not read these parts.

Some of the yummy-sounding recipes are Lentil-Spud Burgers, Neat Loaf, Mock Tuna Salad, and My Mom’s Wacky Cake.

Visit the Main Street Vegan website for more information about Ms. Moran and the Main Street Vegan community.

VZ 068: The Joy of Vegan Baking

Vegetarian Zen Podcast Episode 068 - The Joy of Vegan Baking https://www.vegetarianzen.com

Before I became a vegetarian I had a lot of misconceptions about vegan baked goods.  I knew nothing about vegan baking, and I figured that vegan cookies and cakes must be filled with really weird ingredients, have a texture like cardboard, and taste, well…funky. Boy was I wrong!! Even though we are not full-time vegans, […]

VZ 063: Tips to Help You Transition From Vegetarian to Vegan

Vegetarian Zen Podcast Episode 063 -Tips to Help You Transition from Vegetarian to Vegan https://www.vegetarianzen.com

We believe that a plant-based lifestyle should never be an all-or-nothing proposition.  When we became vegetarians, we did it all at once and it was a bit of a struggle.  Some people may be fine with a quick change, however. Same thing goes for transitioning from a vegetarian to vegan lifestyle.  It may be that you’re […]
