Investing in our Health

When Larissa and I became vegetarians in 2013, we did it ALL the wrong ways!

Sure, we gave up meat (we did THAT part right), BUT…we soon found ourselves becoming “junk food vegetarians.” In other words, we were eating a lot of highly processed foods with little or no health benefits. You can read more about our plant-based journey here.

Needless to say, as a result, our health and energy tanked. It wasn’t until we started learning more about the importance of nutrition and reduced our processed food intake that we started feeling better.

One of the first things we did to turn around our health was to learn about ways to get healthier foods in our bodies. Because Larissa doesn’t like a LOT of fruits and veggies, this was going to be a challenge (for her, at least).

Juicing vs. Blending: What’s The Difference?

One way we learned that we could get a LOT of nutrition into our bodies in a healthy and delicious way was through blending and juicing.

For the longest time, we mistakenly believed that juicing and blending were the same thing, but they’re not. You can learn more about the difference between juicing and blending in episode 4 of our podcast, Juice It Up!

The Vitamix blender is NOT a juicer. It’s a high-powered blender, and great for making smoothies.  Not long after we got our “baby” home, we realized what a gem we really had! Not only does the Vitamix blender make incredible smoothies, but it’s also useful for making soups, desserts, quick-breads, condiments, dips, and more!

Why Using a High-Quality Blender Really DOES Make a Difference!

Another big misconception we had when we first started on our plant-based journey is that all blenders are created equal. Not true!

In this video by Nutritionfacts.org, Dr. Michael Greger discusses how much more nutritional bang for our buck we can get from a good high-powered blender.

Essentially, when fruits and veggies are broken down to a greater degree than we can accomplish by chewing alone, more of their valuable nutrients become “available” for our bodies to use. This means that the body can absorb more goodness from these whole foods as they pass through the digestive system.

Other Recipes We’ve Tried

As mentioned above, we haven’t limited the use of our Vitamix blender to just smoothies.

We’ve also made a moist and flavorful blueberry orange quick bread (recipe from the cookbook included with the machine). For this quick bread, the machine blends the wet ingredients (including an entire peeled orange!) which are then added to a bowl with the dry ingredients and blueberries and mixed by hand. Bake in a loaf pan in the oven, and voila…delicious, nutritious bread!

We then tried minestrone (another Vitamix cookbook recipe), which is prepared completely in the blender. When run at high speed, the blender generates heat, which cooks the soup perfectly. I really like this because there’s only one cooking “dish” to wash. The soup itself was fantastic, and I felt really good about eating it, knowing that everything in it was completely natural. Additionally, the recipe made six generous servings, meaning easy leftovers for us.

Would We Buy Our Vitamix Again?

Absolutely YES! We have certainly gotten a LOT of bang for our buck, and years after we purchased it, the blender is still going strong.

As with my review of the Omega Juicer, I’ve provided answers below to the questions we asked when considering which blender to purchase. I hope you find this review helpful.  If you have further questions, please don’t hesitate to leave a comment or shoot me an email via our Contact Us page.

A: Yes.

Q: Parts well-labeled?

Ease of Use

Q: Are instructions to use easy to understand and follow?

A: Yes.

Q: Are the parts dishwasher-safe?

A: Vitamix does not recommend placing the container, lid, lid plug, or tamper (used for pushing food into the blade while in use) in the dishwasher.
