VZ 069: Superfoods – Marketing Ploy or the Real McCoy?

Have you noticed, over the past few years, a trend in the grocery marketplace toward pushing products that contain “superfoods”?  As in, “Buy this pancake mix containing the superfood flax!”.  Or, “XYZ granola is packed with superfood ingredients like blueberries, acai berries, and chia seeds!”.

So, is there really such a thing as a “superfood”?  Yes and no.  Of course fresh, whole, organic vegetables and fruits are good for you and packed full of vitamins, antioxidants, fiber, and other nutrients.  And some naturally have more than others.  So in essence wouldn’t they all be superfoods?

In this episode of the podcast, you’ll learn about some foods that have been dubbed superfoods, why some resources consider lean meats and dairy products to be superfoods (and why we don’t), and what some of the purported benefits of superfoods are.
