VZ 105: Why Aren’t There More Vegetarian and Vegan Men?

June 21, 2015 //  by Larissa Galenes

Today’s episode of the Vegetarian Zen podcast is a listener request. Rachel asked us if we would explore the topic of vegetarian and vegan men. Here is what she said:

I have an idea for a future podcast. I think a lot of vegetarians and vegans are women.  Why aren’t there many guys who are vegetarian?  What are the cultural factors that hold them back?  What do guys who are vegetarian say about how their friends and coworkers relate to them?  And how can we get more men involved?

I am a vegetarian BUT i want to be a vegan! I am a 14 year old guy and live in Sweden. I do not eat any kind of meat, I also try to avoid candy with gelatine in because it’s from swine.
I’m thinking to start trying to avoid milk and eggs and that stuff in secret hehe. At least try. If my family was richer then I’d definitevely be a vegan.

      Hi Diego!

It’s so nice to hear from you! I’m glad you’ve found our podcast, and hope it’s helping you. Sometimes living with family who are not vegetarian or vegan can be tough. Have you tried talking to your parents about your wish to stop eating eggs and milk, and other dairy products? I don’t know what the economy is like in Sweden (how expensive things are, etc), but there are ways you can be vegan without buying expensive “replacement” products like fake meats and cheeses. Just be sure that you understand the nutrients you need (especially since you are still growing) and are getting enough of everything. I hope you’ll keep in touch, and please let us know if there is something you would like to hear us talk about on the podcast.

Thanks for listening and for sharing your story!

      Peace & Veggies,
      Larissa
